Reunion Info Issue

               January 2008

Dear Pointer,
 

Welcome to 2008! 

In a few weeks you will receive an email and/or post card from Harris Connect Inc. (the folks who produce our alumni directory and host the online directory) asking you to call them to verify the contact information we have for you in our database.  This is a PLHSPA approved update and your information will remain secure, private and available only for PLHSPA purposes. Please take the time to contact Harris (even if there are no changes to your data!) so that we have verification from you that your information is current.  This will help us continue to maintain the most up-to-date records of our 34,000+ alumni. You will be able to give them your privacy and security preferences at the same time.  And if you talk to other Pointers tell them to contact Harris as well!

In this issue you will find information about reunion plans for this year.  Please let us know if you aware of any upcoming reunions not on this list or if you wish to chair a reunion that is not being planned!

Over the winter break John Freeman supervised the installation of the first of 2 signs on campus recognizing retired Coach Bennie Edens for his contributions to PLHS.  The second sign will be up in a few weeks at the PL Stadium. Thank you to everyone who contributed to the success of this effort! 

In addition, thanks to the generosity of our alumni and community, the Bennie Edens Scholarship fund has over $4,000 in it. This year one graduating senior will receive a scholarship in Coach Edens' name.  Our goal is to raise enough to set up an endowment through the San Diego Foundation. This would ensure an on-going scholarship for many years to come.  The minimum needed to set up an endowed fund is $10,000.  If you would like to participate in helping us meet this goal, go to Bennie Fund.

On Campus

History/Social Studies Awards for Academics:

Last year the History/Social Studies Department held their second annual Awards Banquet at the Bali Hai Restaurant.  This hugely successful (standing room only dinner and awards) event was single handedly created and organized by Patrick McElhaney the co-chair of the Department.  The event was designed to recognize all the hard work of students in history and social studies classes.

Two awards were inaugurated: A book award in honor of Tom Hayes (retired 2007) to the top history student and a plaque and monetary award in honor of Malin Burnham, PLHS '45, to the top student who displayed an outstanding interest and excellence in current affairs and international relations.  The latter award was generously sponsored by George Mitrovich and the City Club of San Diego.

Two giants of the History Department retired in 2007:

Tom Hayes and Tom Carnes.  In their honor two trees were planted on campus.  Plans call for a small bronze marker at the base to recognize the service of these two stellar teachers.

Make a Difference at PLHS!

Alumni, you can make a difference! Together we will help PLHS become a Center of Excellence in our Community. 

The Nominating Committee is looking for volunteers to help the PLHSPA.  We need everything from occasional "worker bees" who just want to be involved and have fun working with other Pointer supporters for a couple of hours on a project, to committee members who can spend a few hours a month in their special niche, to elected Board Members who guide the PLHSPA's activities and programs. 

If you want to help improve the quality programs at PLHS, upgrade and maintain campus facilities, help former Pointers stay in contact with the school and their classmates, and work with alumni, staff and parents,  then the PLHSPA is a great place to be involved.   Just tell us what interests you and we will find a spot for you!

Make a difference at PLHS!  Go to Volunteer to see what kinds of things there are to do, then fill out the form to tell us how you would like to be involved.
