Bennie
Edens Tribute Sign and Scholarship Fund
|
|
Thank you to every one who has contributed to the
campaign to pay Tribute to Coach Bennie Edens with signage and a
scholarship.
We have nearly reached our goal for the signs. And at this time,
the Scholarship fund has received donations that will provide multiple
Scholarships for the next couple of years. If we can reach our goal
to raise enough for an endowment it will ensure scholarships in Coach
Edens' name for many years to come. More about the Bennie Edens Fund.
Update: Bennie celebrated his
82nd birthday on December 7th. His health is failing, but hopes are
high that he will spend the Holidays at home after several weeks at PL
Convalescent Hospital. Pointer alumni have responded with donations
to the sign and scholarship fund and with wonderful stories about their
experiences with Coach on the football field and off.
Coach Bennie has received hundreds of email well-wishes from Pointer
alumni and friends. Bill Settles reads them all to him.
Send
Bennie an email.
Read the article about the special relationship
between Coach Edens and his former QB Bill Settles '66 that appeared in
the December 15th Union Tribune.
Many thanks to John Freeman '69 for his energy and enthusiasm in bringing
this campaign together, and to Bill Settles for his friendship to Bennie
and his continued updates to us.

ALUMNI MADRIGALS STILL MAKING MUSIC AFTER 40 YEARs!
For a small group of PLHS Madrigal Singers, their devotion to
an excellent teacher has lasted over 40 years. Dr. Lewis Phelps,
former Choir and Madrigal director at PLHS, joined his students from
'65-'67 at a weekend party held at the home of alumni Glenn Thomas '68
and his wife Judith. After the event an $800 donation was made to the
planned new PLHSFAA
Music Center in honor of Dr. Phelps by the Madrigal
Singers of 1966, '67, and '68.
The group planned for months to spend the weekend singing music
from their favorite high school performances. Music was forwarded
all over the country via internet; i-tunes were downloaded for practice
and the group came together in an 'invite chat room' as they planned for
the weekend.

NEW POINTER DOG MASCOT MAKES HIS DEBUT AT THE Q!
The Class of 1967 raised funds at
their class reunion to give the gift of a new Pointer Dog Mascot suit to
PLHS through the PLHSFAA. Affectionately named "Bennie"
for Coach Edens, the new mascot was crafted by Pointer Alum Connie Panek
and Alumni spouse Leah Ellington.

Many thanks to Jim Sills and Marcy McCann who spearheaded this effort on
behalf of the Class of 67.
