Alumni Memory Room taking shape!
|
|
After
many productive Monday afternoon/evening workshops (and lots of
fun memories shared) Room 301 at PLHS has become a Museum
of Pointer history. Each decade is represented by
pictures, yearbook pages, momentos from events, and newspaper
articles. There are several Lomanette (complete with fur
covered boots and hat) and cheer uniforms, and even Ms. Caroline
Crosby's personal whistle on display! The room is a work
in progress and displays will change periodically. We
are still working on a Famous Pointers area.
Now we hope that you, the Pointer family, will visit the room (by
appointment only) and bring more stories and momentos to share. We
want to build a lasting Pointer history and need you to tell us
what you know and identify people and places in the pictures. We
plan to put up a timeline where visitors can add information
to help us recall special awards (CIF sports, Journalism awards,
etc.) and events.
Contact Kim at 619 226-4509 you would like to visit the room or bring
a group of classmates. We will put out additional photos, yearbooks
and Pointer newspapers specific to your group to enjoy.

Congratulations to PLHS Girl's
Soccer -
CIF Division
II Champions!
|
|
|
The PLHS girls Soccer team clinched its first CIF Division
II Championship title and went on to represent PLHS
in the regional state playoffs (the first time
PL has sent a team to the state's post-season play
since the 1999 boys basketball team.)
Tho they lost in the regionals, they are the first
girls soccer team from PLHS ever to advance beyond
the semi-final round.
Congratulations to Coach John Murphy and the team
on a great season!

History Banquet to Honor Academic
Success
Sponsor a student's excellence for just $19
|
|
For four years, Point Loma High has sponsored a tradition of
rewarding excellence in the academic field of History. It
is our philosophy that the formal acknowledgement
and celebration of academic achievement meaningfully impacts
student motivation.
The banquet celebration of Student Achievement in History
is scheduled for June 3 at the Bali Hai Restaurant. Students, parents,
and special guests will be in attendance. We estimate that
approximately 50 students may need financial assistance, and we're
seeking $20 donations to sponsor these deserving young scholars.
Imagine if every alumni class sponsored a scholar!
You can also create a custom scholarship to reward an outstanding
student for their dedication and excellence for $50- $100 per student,
in your name or your company's.
To make a tax-deductible donation, go to History Banquet.

Sharing a career -
Pointer Alum Gilbert Simas, M.D.
|
Recently, the PLHSFAA received an email from
Gilbert Simas, Pointer Class of 1990, who wanted to know how
he could give back to his school. We hooked him up with faculty,
who invited him to campus on his recent vacation in San Diego,
to speak to students about his career.
Today Gilbert is a Fellow in Addiction Psychiatry at Oregon Health & Science
University in Portland, Oregon. PLHS Teacher Lindsy Donnelly
invited him to speak to her Healthcare Essentials students. About
his experience, Gilbert wrote, "It was truly a pleasure and
quite enjoyable to speak to such a responsive and engaged audience."
But he took it a step further for today's Pointers: "After
my talk, I was thinking that it would be very helpful if interested
students had access to someone to talk to about the medical profession,
and it would be my pleasure to make myself available."
Career inspiration in the science, math, technology and engineering
fields are vital to today's students. We love it when alumni reconnect!

Thank you to our Golf supporters!
Because
golf tournaments can cost nearly as much as they earn for our
students, the PLHSFAA Board determined that under current economic
conditions, when every penny needs to benefit PLHS, we could
not risk the expense. But we know our players and sponsors
believe in PLHS and want to help, so we asked them to support
our efforts by donating to NOT play golf. These contributions
will directly impact Pointers past, present and future.
Many thanks for not playing golf go to:
