Pointer Association eUpdate

Pointer Dog

  October  2009

Dear Pointer,

Pointer Alumni, come home!  Homecoming

Homecoming is on October 16th.  Join us for football (vs Mission Bay) under the lights (one night per year) at PLHS.  Look for the alumni seating section.  And please walk with us in the Homecoming parade so present Pointers can see what Alumni spirit looks like.  Wear your Pointer colors (or if you still fit into something from high school, wear that!)  We will provide kazoos. Meet us on the field just before halftime.

Pointer Alum, Jeffrey Bennett '76, to speak at PLHS October 22 at 6pm.

Join us to hear Astronomer, Teacher, Writer and Pointer Alum, Jeffrey Bennett speak on campus.  (he will address students earlier in the day.) His book "Beyond UFOs" was required reading for the class of 2012 at Univ. of Miami Ohio. His focus on looking beyond our selves, and beyond our world, as we look to the way we shape the future is inspiring and thought provoking. Please reply by email if you plan to attend.

Message from new PLHS Athletic Director, John Murphy:

I am honored and privileged to have the opportunity to teach, coach and serve the students and community here at PLHS.  My wife, Irma, and I have two daughters, Maegan, 23 years old (a graduate of Villanova University and current graduate student at SDSU) and Shelby, 17 years old (a Senior at PLHS).  We've lived in Point Loma for many years and have raised our family in our OB/PL community.

I would like to continue to work towards bringing our community together here at PLHS.

In the past two years the "Picture Yourself A Pointer" day has been very successful in linking together the staff and students at Correia Middle school with students and staff at PLHS; We look forward to hosting this event again on Dec. 10th when students from Correia will be hosted by PLHS students and staff for campus tours and an introduction to programs and activities available at PLHS.

Our Surf PE class is the only program in the SDUSD to offer such a course, alumni and community members can come down to O.B. and find close to 50 PLHS students surfing 3-4 times a week.  This class was made possible by numerous community members coming together and supporting our students and working with our Principal Bobbie Samilson to make it happen.

It is these types of collaborative efforts that help to make PLHS a truly unique community school, with the emphasis on giving our students the most comprehensive educational and athletic opportunities in San Diego.

Our athletic programs have continued to improve under the direction of Coach Hastings with the Men's tennis team capturing it's second consecutive CIF Championship, the Women's Soccer team winning it's first ever CIF Championship this past year, and the football team poised to compete for another CIF Championship this year.

I would encourage everyone to check the school's website www.pointlomahigh.com  to find schedules of all of our events as we have many teams that will make the playoffs this year and continue our tradition of Pointer Pride.

Our school is blessed to have a very dedicated and caring staff of teachers, coaches and support staff, please join us in serving the next generation of Pointers.

Pointer Priorities for PLHS

Working with the PLHS administration, the Pointer Association has identified needs for the current school year.

  • Athletics
  • Classroom Gifts/Grants
  • Scholarships

In addition, the PA has a preliminary budget that includes funding for lunch area umbrellas, Senior and underclass awards, college night and college panel, and School planners, teacher appreciation and Volunteer appreciation.

San Diego Country Credit Union partners with PLHS:

Helping us provide enrichment activities, student support programs, and appreciation to our faculty/staff, SDCCU's partnership with the Pointer Association in support of PLHS is a true gift.

This year they are giving $1 from the sale of tickets to the Poinsettia Bowl sold by the PLHS community back to PLHS.  If you are a football fan, please purchase your family pack tickets throught this generous offer.  Poinsettia Bowl tix.

We can't do it without you!

With the current flux in the economy there has been a dramatic reduction in charitable giving across the country. The Pointer Association needs your help more than ever to continue to provide alumni support, academic enrichment, campus improvements and scholarships in keeping with our mission of benefitting Pointers past, present and future.

There are many ways you can help: Become a member of the Pointer Association,  consider a gift to your alma mater, sign up for eScrip, purchase tickets to the Poinsettia Bowl via San Diego County Credit Union.

The PLHS Pointer Association
New name; Still making great things happen!

The PLHS Foundation and Alumni Association has a new name.  We are now officially the PLHS Pointer Association.  We have also added the actvities and volunteer support of the former PLHS PTSA to our organization.  With the combined efforts of Alumni, Boosters, Parents, staff, and ASB we continue to make great things happen at PLHS!  Read more at Pointer Association
