Spirit of the Pointer sculpture
Donated by the Alumni
November 13, 2010
Sculptor Richard Arnold '59
Dear Account,
This final issue of the Alumni eUpdate of the year is filled with links to lots
and lots of pictures for your enjoyment. The 85th Gala,
Spirit of the Pointer unveiling (and dedication, and student dedication), Noah
Tafolla's wonderful history of PLHS (produced for the Gala), and a very special
singing of the Alma Mater. We hope you will find time to view them
all....guaranteed to rekindle memories, and bring a smile to your face. Just
click the link for each album below and they should pop up. (They are posted to
You Tube and the Pointer Association Facebook page but you do not need to be a
Facebook member to view them.) You can click on any picture to enlarge it.
Also in this issue, In Memoriam. Thank you to those
who continue to send us notice of Pointer's who have passed so we can honor
them here. (Special thanks to Suzanne Ballantyne for her regular reports!)
Here is wishing you and yours the best of everything as we move into 2011.
Once a Pointer, Always a Pointer!

(PS....How do you all feel about renaming our eUpdates 'Pupdates'?)
PLHS 85th Gala Celebration
The Gala committee, Andrea Justus, Eleanor Snyder, and
Maria Virissimo Gibson '87, pulled off a great event. A fun night, plenty of
old Pointer friends to chat with and new friends to meet, a history area, and
display of current Pointer programs, dancing, food, laughter, and great auction
items. Over $40,000 was raised for Pointer "Three As' for Success: Arts,
Academics, and Athletics." Also, at the event, the
unveiling of the Spirit of the Pointer sculpture, and a video production of
PLHS history (from vacant lot to today!) by Noah Tafolla '86 (KPBS Wonderland).

one was not working on Dec. 20th....will try to get it back up soon!)
Singing of the Alma Mater at the Gala
You do not want to miss this one!!! Golden
Pointer Ken Harvey '42 and sons, Jim '73 and Doug '76, sing the Alma Mater at
the Gala. (Check out which one of the three does not need the cheat sheet with
the words!!!)
Spirit of the Pointer
Dedication and installation
After months of anticipation, (and almost a year of planning), the Spirit of
the Pointer sculpture was unveiled at the Gala, then dedicated and installed
the next day on campus. To say that 'our Pointer' is a hit would be an
understatement. Everyone who comes in contact feels compelled to pet/pat or
scritch his head or chin, or to hold his paw. He is being photographed
regularly (stop by and pose with him!) with classes of students, Pointer
families, athletic teams, and staff. And last week he was wearing a Santa hat!
Photo Album: Spirit of the Pointer and Dedication
A dedication just for the students was held on campus
during lunch a few days after the Gala. Principal Bobbie Samilson shared
Richard Arnold's inspirational story and asked him to speak to the students.
The Cheer team and band members wore Cheer, Songleader, Lomanette, and Band
uniforms from the past.

Pointer
To Richard Arnold '59, a huge thank you for the idea, and the talent to make it
happen. What a wonderful gift you have given to Pointers past, present and
future. And to Randy Dietz, thank you for donating your time and expertise to
build the base, lay the bricks, and even plant a
couple of maroon plants on either side of the base! And Jeff Moore,
thanks for all your help making the dog ready for the unveiling!
Thank you to all the alumni who donated to this Gift to PLHS, which also
generated enough in donations to fund a Spirit of the Pointer scholarship. We
hope alumni will continue to donate to this scholarship fund in years to come!

A couple of other things:
Alum Steve Baldwin '75 was left out of the list of
Accomplished Alumni, Politicians. Steve was elected to the California State
Assembly in 1994 and chaired the Legislative Committee on Education. He was
also the youngest minority whip in California history.

Alum Jon Berndes '65
never ceases to amaze us.....This time it was a 600 lb pumpkin that he grew in
his garden, then drove all over San Diego for a variety of uses (including to
promote USC football!) He promises an even bigger one next year!
Here's to You Point Loma High School, a DVD compilation of photos and video from footage left by
Caroline Crosby is still available from the Fort Guijarros Foundation. Click here for more info or email Paula Reynolds. This makes a great Holiday gift for anyone
who lived in PL in the late 1950s through mid 1960s.
Message from Principal
